LPI Summer Internship Program in Planetary Science provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to perform cutting-edge research, learn from widely respected planetary scientists, and discover exciting careers in planetary science. LPI Summer Internship

Students with at least 50 semester hours of credit are invited to participate in cutting-edge research in lunar and planetary sciences at the Lunar and Planetary Institute. In addition to physical and natural science majors, engineering, computer science, and mathematics majors will also be considered.

This 10-week program will take place between June 5 and August 11, 2023. During the summer, interns will work on a research project with a scientist from the LPI or the NASA Johnson Space Center. The selection process takes into account information provided in the application, such as academic experience, scientific interests, and the requirements of the research project.

Participants will be notified in March 2023 if they have been selected. Those who participate in person will be located at either the Lunar and Planetary Institute or NASA Johnson Space Center in Housto

Eligibility Criteria

  • The scholarship is designed for undergraduates having 50 semester credit hours.
  • Candidates with specialization in physical and natural sciences, computer science, mathematics, or engineering are preferred.
  • Everyone regardless of gender, sex, or disability is eligible.
  • Candidates will be selected based on their scholarship, curriculum, experience, scientific interest, career goals, and research projects.
  • NO IELTS/TOEFL is Required if you can get English Proficiency Certificate from your professor of English at your university.

About Us:

The LPI is located near the NASA Johnson Space Center, on the southeast side of Houston, Texas. On NASA’s behalf, the LPI provides leadership in the scientific community for research in lunar, planetary, and solar system sciences, and linkage with related terrestrial programs.

Financial Support

Selected interns will receive up to $7,720 in financial support to cover the costs associated with being in Houston for the duration of the program. This amount covers the internship stipend, travel, housing, and cost of living expenses. Interns traveling from an international location may be eligible for an additional $500 to cover travel expenses.

In addition, interns who completed the internship program and submitted an accepted abstract as the first author to the upcoming Lunar and Planetary Science Conference are eligible to receive a stipend of up to $1,000 (domestic travelers) and up to $1,500 (international travelers) to help defray travel expenses.
